The Temptation of Jesus
Matthew 4:1-11
Verse 1
Then the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Verse 2
After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was very hungry.
Verse 3
Then the tempter came and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Verse 4
But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘A person does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Verse 5
Then the devil took Jesus to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the temple.
Verse 6
He said, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘God will command his angels to take care of you. They will lift you up in their hands, so you will not hit your foot against a stone.’”
Verse 7
Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’”
Verse 8
Then the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
Verse 9
He said, “I will give all this to you if you bow down and worship me.”
Verse 10
Jesus said, “Go away, Satan! It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
Verse 11
Then the devil left him, and angels came to take care of Jesus.
