Commentary

The Beatitudes are the foundation of Jesus’ teaching on what it means to live a blessed life. Contrary to worldly expectations, Jesus teaches that true blessing comes not from wealth, power, or comfort, but from humility, righteousness, mercy, and faithfulness to God.

Each Beatitude highlights a different characteristic of a godly person and the reward they will receive. For example, the “poor in spirit” recognize their need for God and are promised the kingdom of heaven. Those who “hunger and thirst for righteousness” desire God’s will above all else and will be satisfied.

Jesus also teaches that those who are persecuted for their faith should rejoice because their reward in heaven is great. Just as the prophets faced opposition, believers who stand for God will also experience trials. However, their faithfulness will not go unnoticed by God.

This passage challenges us to adopt a kingdom mindset, seeking eternal rewards rather than temporary worldly success.
