Commentary

In this passage, Jesus uses two powerful metaphors—salt and light—to describe the role of His followers in the world.

Salt was essential in ancient times for preserving food and adding flavor. When Jesus calls believers the “salt of the earth,” He is emphasizing their role in influencing the world with God’s righteousness. However, if salt loses its taste (meaning if believers fail to live faithfully), it becomes useless.

Similarly, Jesus calls His followers the “light of the world.” Just as a lamp is meant to shine, Christians are meant to reflect God’s truth and goodness. A city on a hill cannot be hidden, and neither should a believer’s faith. Instead, they should live in a way that brings glory to God through their actions.

This passage challenges us to be bold in our faith. We are called to make a difference in the world by living in a way that reflects Christ’s love, righteousness, and truth.
