Commentary
Jesus teaches about the dangers of focusing on worldly wealth instead of eternal treasures. Earthly possessions are temporary—they can decay, be stolen, or lose value. However, treasures stored in heaven—acts of love, kindness, faith, and obedience—are eternal and cannot be lost.
Jesus then compares the eye to a lamp. A healthy eye (a spiritually focused heart) fills the body with light, meaning wisdom and righteousness. But an unhealthy eye (a heart focused on greed and sin) brings darkness into a person’s life.
Finally, Jesus warns that we cannot serve both God and money. We must choose where our devotion lies. If we prioritize wealth and material success over God, our hearts will be divided. True discipleship requires full commitment to God, trusting Him to provide rather than being controlled by money.
This passage challenges us to examine our priorities. Are we investing in temporary things or in God’s eternal kingdom?
