Commentary
Jesus’ baptism marks the beginning of His public ministry. John the Baptist, knowing that Jesus was greater than him, hesitated to baptize Him. However, Jesus insisted because it was necessary to fulfill all righteousness. This moment is significant because it shows the Trinity: God the Father speaks from heaven, Jesus is baptized, and the Holy Spirit descends like a dove. The voice from heaven confirms Jesus as God’s beloved Son.
This passage teaches us obedience, humility, and the confirmation of Jesus as the Messiah. Even though Jesus was without sin, He chose to be baptized as an example for us to follow. His baptism also symbolized His future death and resurrection, foreshadowing how believers would identify with Him through baptism.
