Commentary
This passage shows how Jesus, though fully God, faced real temptation as a human. He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasted for forty days. The devil tempted Him three times, but each time, Jesus responded with Scripture.
The first temptation was about physical needs—turning stones into bread. Jesus reminded the devil that true life comes from God’s word, not just food. The second temptation was about testing God’s power—jumping from the temple to see if angels would save Him. Jesus refused, saying that we must not test God. The third temptation was about power and worship—the devil offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. Jesus firmly rejected him, declaring that only God deserves worship.
This passage teaches us that knowing and using God’s Word is the key to overcoming temptation. It also shows that Jesus remained faithful, trusting God rather than taking shortcuts. His victory over temptation is an example for us when we face challenges in our faith.
