Lesson 1: My Family

Objective

Introduce young learners (ages 4-8) to basic family vocabulary and simple sentence patterns to talk about family members.

Lesson Overview

  • Duration: 20–30 minutes

  • Target Vocabulary: mother, father, brother, sister, baby

  • Target Sentences: “This is a ____.”, “It’s a ____.”

Lesson Flow

Warm-Up (3 minutes)

  • Goal: Build rapport and activate speaking.

  • Activities:

    • Greet students: “Hello! How are you today? Are you happy? Let’s learn English!”

    • Engage with clapping and have students respond with “Ready!”

 

Part 1: Topic Introduction

  • Goal: Introduce the family topic.

  • Activity: Show a big family picture and say, “This is a family. Family!” Encourage students to repeat.

Part 2: New Words

  • Goal: Learn family vocabulary.

  • Activities:

    • Show big pictures of each family member.

    • Teach one word at a time: “Mother,” “Father,” “Brother,” “Sister,” “Baby.”

    • Repeat each word and have students repeat after you.

 

Part 3: Look and Say

  • Goal: Introduce sentence patterns.

  • Activities:

    • Point to pictures: “This is a mother,” “This is a father,” “This is a baby.”

    • Have students repeat each sentence.

Page 4: Questions

  • Goal: Answer simple questions.

  • Activities:

    • Ask “Who is this?” while pointing to pictures.

    • Help students answer: “It’s a mother,” “It’s a baby.”

    • Use Zoom annotation to circle, draw, or point.

Part 5: Count and Find

  • Goal: Develop observation skills.

  • Activities:

    • Count family members in pictures: “How many sisters? One sister. How many brothers? Two brothers.”

    • Count together with students.

Part 6: What Color?

  • Goal: Notice colors.

  • Activities:

    • Ask “What color?” while pointing to items in the pictures, such as shirts or hats.

    • Students respond with color names: “Red!”, “Blue!”

 

Part 7: Yes or No?

  • Goal: Build listening comprehension.

  • Activities:

    • Ask questions: “Is this a father?” and “Is this a dog?”

    • Students respond: “Yes!” or “No!”

    • Include funny questions to engage: “Is this a dinosaur?”

 

Part 8: Speak!

  • Goal: Encourage free speaking.

  • Activities:

    • Have students say: “This is my family. I love my family.”

    • Encourage students to repeat and express themselves.

 

Extension Activity (Optional)
  • Draw Your Family:

    • Ask students to draw their family and describe each member: “Who is this? It’s my mother.”

Final Review (2 Minutes)
  • Activities:

    • Point to random family pictures and ask, “What is it?”

    • Students answer with the correct family word.
