D. Tips and Strategies for OPIc Test Takers
Below are two of the tips provided by ACTFL for the OPIc test takers:
- Understand Your Proficiency Goal.
- Understand the Test format.
Understand Your Proficiency Goal
In order to prepare effectively, the first thing you must ensure is that you understand your goal. Keep it in mind to boost efficiency and success. Actively listen to your teacher as they explains the expectations for your target level and practice accordingly. Aligning your abilities with these standards will lead you to accomplish
your goal.
Understand the Test format
Understanding what the test format will be can help you reduce the pressure and
anxiety before the test. You can focus your efforts on specific skills and tasks required in each section. More importantly, it will guide you to have accurate self-
assessment during your personal preparation. According to the website of ACTFL (2022):
The OPI occurs in four parts: introduction, warm-up, the interview, and the
cool down. The interview includes two types of prompts: level checks and
probes. The tester will move between level checks and probes until they
arrive at a final rating. Familiarize yourself with the format of the OPI by
reviewing the OPI Familiarization Guide. (ACTFL, 2022, para. 3)
The OPIc is a computer-delivered assessment that emulates the ‘live’ OPI, but
delivery of prompts is through a carefully designed computer program, and
via a virtual avatar, Ava, the OPIc “Tester.” Familiarize yourself with the
format of the OPI by reviewing the OPIc Familiarization Guide. (ACTFL,
2022, para. 4)
